Understanding the Core Difference

Both 304 and 316 are austenitic stainless steels from the 300 series, which means they share a foundation of iron, chromium (16-18%), and nickel (8-10%). This chromium content is what creates the passive oxide layer that makes stainless steel “stainless.”

The critical difference lies in one additional element: molybdenum. Grade 316 contains 2-3% molybdenum, while 304 contains none. This seemingly small addition has a significant impact on one specific property: resistance to chloride corrosion.

Grade 304: The Versatile Workhorse

Also known as 18/8 stainless steel (18% chromium, 8% nickel), Grade 304 is the most widely produced stainless steel in the world. It offers excellent corrosion resistance in most everyday environments, good formability, and straightforward weldability.

The molybdenum in Grade 316 significantly improves resistance to pitting corrosion caused by chlorides — particularly important in marine environments, chlorinated water systems, and chemical processing involving chloride compounds.

Grade 316 typically costs 20-30% more than Grade 304 due to its molybdenum content. For large projects, this difference can be substantial. This is why accurate environment assessment matters — specifying 316 where 304 would perform adequately wastes money, while using 304 in aggressive environments can lead to costly failures.

How to Choose: A Practical Framework

Consider Temperature Requirements

Both grades perform similarly at room temperature, but for high-temperature applications (above 800°C), the molybdenum in 316 provides additional strength retention. For extremely high temperatures, you may need to consider 316L (low carbon variant) to prevent sensitization during welding.

Consider Your Budget and Risk Tolerance

For mission-critical applications where failure is unacceptable (medical devices, structural components, chemical containment), the extra cost of 316 is almost always justified. For applications where you can monitor and replace components if needed, 304 may provide adequate performance at lower cost.

Special Variants: 304L and 316L

The ‘L’ variants (304L and 316L) are low-carbon versions of their parent grades. They’re specifically used for welded applications, as the lower carbon content prevents carbide precipitation during welding, which can cause sensitization and reduce corrosion resistance near welds.

If your application involves extensive welding and will be exposed to corrosive conditions, always specify the L grade.
